I've been an avid gardener ever since I was able to pick up a shovel. Years of farming and gardening hasn't dulled this interest so when recent changes were made to certain Canadian laws, it was only natural that I would take up indoor gardening. Most people would buy themselves a grow tent and place it in a unused room, but that would be too easy for me. I'm not interested in listening to fans and blowers all day long, so the obvious answer was for me to put my grow out in the garage.
Using a unheated garage to home my grow poses a number of challenges, including cold in the winter and heat in the summer. To address this, I built a insulated box on wheels. Adding some automation to the box made it able to mostly look after itself.

Box Frame
Basic Box Frame: The floor has been insulated underneath with some of the white Styrofoam you see. Some large casters I found allow the box to be moved around. Note the $20 Air conditioner I purchased off Kijiji. It will be placed in the square frame on the left to provide cooling during the summer.

Skinned Box
Skinned Box: Box has been skinned with various pieces of found plywood. A shelf has been added to hold the air conditioner. Holes are for the air intake and controls. Blocks will allow the hinges to be flush with the doors.

Painted
Painted: Painted to make it look a bit prettier.
|
Controls
Controls: The current control set includes one for Heating and Cooling, a 24 hour timer for lighting and a countdown timer for ventilation. I will be adding a humidity controller so the box can act as a dryer. Heating is achieved using a ceramic space heater. Cooling with a air conditioner. Lighting is LED grow lights. Ventilation is provided by a blower connected to a barrel charcoal filter.

Lighting and Insulation
Lighting and Insulation: Lighting consists of 2 LED grow lights. LED's are great because they draw very little power. Thank you Home Depot for carrying foam insulation that has one side covered with reflective mylar. Great for bouncing the light around. Note the fan in the top corner to circulate the heat and wiggle the plants.
Blower and Charcoal filter are mounted on the top.

Finished
Finished: Doors are mounted and controls are installed. Hold down clamps are used to give the doors a better seal.
Now all I need is some seeds.
